Our first time doing this: giving a testimony at the singles’ dinner our church put on. My husband spoke first, then me.
My husband
老公
Peace to you all. We were asked some time ago to share a testimony at this event, and at first we were a thousand times unwilling. But we took it to our family altar and prayed about it, and in the end we obeyed what the Holy Spirit was pressing on us, put ourselves aside, and stood up here.
I really did not know what to share with you. After praying, the Holy Spirit took me back through counting God’s grace. I think about being single back then and about having a family here in America now, and apart from calling it God’s astonishing grace, I do not know how to describe it.
I came to America in 2006, chasing the American dream I had pictured for myself, and I tried every way I could think of to stay. What I expected of myself in those days was to be a cockroach you cannot kill.
In 2011 I walked into a church only because I wanted to widen my contacts and find more opportunities. Not long after, the Good Shepherd who laid down His life for me found me instead and carried me back into His sheepfold. Inside, I saw hope. I saw light.
God led me to the small group I am in now. What I saw was a crowd of people my own age gathering on a Friday night to worship and praise God, to share His word, to pray for each other’s needs. It moved me deeply, and it drew me in.
But inside I felt unworthy, because in my actual life I was in a relationship God was not pleased with, and I did not know how to change it. Not long after, that relationship ended quietly, on its own, as though God were circumcising me.
In 2012 something happened in the home of our small group leader. I kept having a very strong pressing on my heart to pray for her, and then, oddly, I began paying attention to this sister. I was not sure whether I was starting to feel something for her, so I prayed and prayed and prayed. Then God let me see how much she revered His word, how faithful she was in serving His kingdom, how carefully she looked after her family, and that is how I knew what I had begun to feel. So besides one good brother in the Lord, I also told the intern zone leader of our small group how I felt. They were willing to pray for me and to be my covering.
The truth is I still had a lot of uncertainty about my own future in America. My average income was three figures a month, and I still had to keep my student status. Did someone like me really have a chance? I kept praying anyway. As I started serving in the small group I had more and more to do with this sister, and when the chance came up I told her how I felt about her. She handed me a passage from Matthew.
6Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. 7Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes! 8If your hand or foot causes you to sin, cut it off and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet, to be cast into the everlasting fire. 9And if your eye causes you to sin, pluck it out and cast it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes, to be cast into hell fire.Matthew 18:6–9
Reading that at the time, I felt pretty flattened. I told the intern zone leader about it, and all he did was smile and tell me not to overthink it, so I just kept praying. The astonishing thing is that God still gave me the chance to go out with this sister.
Our courtship started with reading the Bible and praying. In those days we often prayed in tears for the salvation of our families, prayed about each other’s future, shared God’s word. We served at church together as well, and in that serving we lived through a lot of grace with God right there, and we also came to see each other’s weaknesses and faults. While we were going out, God gave us a verse.
But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.Joshua 24:15
That told us that if God was gracious enough to let us marry, our home was to serve His kingdom.
I was still waiting for one more confirmation, so when I got the chance I asked her: if the Lord does not let us stay in America, would you be willing to come back to Taiwan with me? She said she had never been to Taiwan and it would be a big challenge for her, but if it really was the Lord’s will, and she could stay connected to a church there, she was willing. Well, that was the last confirmation I had asked God for.
So we asked our pastor to give us pre-marriage counselling. During it we knelt together in front of God and confessed the sins we had fallen into, and opened up about what we each thought marriage was, and the pastor and his wife kept praying for us.
In 2013, under God’s grace and kindness, and with the help and the blessing of a great many brothers and sisters, we made our covenant to each other in front of God and became husband and wife. I remember the pastor’s prayer of blessing: may God give us more love and more forbearance inside our marriage, and then may we go out and bless more brothers and sisters and more family. May our marriage really be able to give God the glory. That same year we each received our green card just before our birthdays. That truly is God’s grace. Not long after, God brought me into a new working environment, where my income was twice those three figures. Grace again.
The next year, 2014, God let a small storm into our marriage. My wife’s ectopic pregnancy made us feel for ourselves that God’s love is with us. God’s love showed itself through the brothers and sisters of our small group. Without God’s love, we really would not have got through that storm.
Then 2015 came, and God’s grace showed itself again. I had not been in the new job eighteen months when God opened the way for us to borrow on a mortgage and move into the warm house we are in now. We know very clearly that this property is God’s, and we are only His stewards.
And now 2016 is here. As for me and my house, may we go on serving God.
Me
我
In 2006 a friend introduced me to the small group I am still in. The green card I had waited five years for had been denied, I had broken up with a married man, and the lawyer said I might have to go back to Hong Kong. That is the state I was in, hopeless and beaten, when my life in a small group in the Lord began. I was baptised in 2007. Even believing, I still stumbled about, wandering between the sweetness of sin and the guilt of it. I was single again for quite a while.
One day, driving home from work, I asked the Lord whether He wanted me to serve Him single, the way Pastor Jiang Xiuqin does. If that is it, I am willing. And if it is not, please stop sending me bad romances. My own family was broken, and I had always had to get through life by relying on myself. I believed in the Lord, but a good marriage was genuinely hard for me to picture.
In 2011 a brother turned up in the small group who liked to hide behind other people and take photographs. When I found out he liked me, my first reaction was that it was not possible. I did like him, as it happens. He was always quietly helping out in the group, and talking about God’s word with him was down to earth and good fun. I also thought he was probably very good to his parents. But there were a lot of practical reasons, and I did not think he was my type, so I turned him down.
Later, when I found that I had feelings for him too, I asked God a very practical question. I already have more unknowns and challenges than I can handle on my own, and to most people’s eyes this brother’s situation was not very steady: his status uncertain, his income uncertain, his work uncertain. Could You take my feelings away before I am in deep and get hurt?
That was when this passage came into my mind.
15For He says to Moses, “I will have mercy on whomever I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whomever I will have compassion.” 16So then it is not of him who wills, nor of him who runs, but of God who shows mercy.Romans 9:15–16
I felt a bit ashamed. I had been very shallow, sizing a person up like that. So I said to the Lord: if this is a relationship You are giving me, open the way and give me peace, and if it is not, take the feelings away.
After that, this brother told me he had told two friends in the group how the two of us had started. I was a little put out. We were not even officially going out, so why tell people all over the place? If it did not work out, would there not be gossip, or at the very least awkwardness? But on the other end of the phone he said the Bible says this.
For there is nothing hidden which will not be revealed, nor has anything been kept secret but that it should come to light.Mark 4:22
He said God is not pleased with a relationship that is not out in the open, and that if God allows it, there is no need to go sneaking about. It moved me. In the love I had known before, because it was not certain or not real, I never would have let it out in the open. Perhaps I just had no faith in it.
One time I went to a prayer meeting with him, and God let me see that he was fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14). He was not a nobody with no future and no confidence in himself. He would be my spiritual leader. That is when I handed this relationship over to God.
God kept providing and kept guarding us. There was a lot of noise and a lot of temptation while we were going out, and all we could do then was hold each other up in prayer. We fell, too. We wept, confessed and repented, and God is full of grace and kindness: He was the one pulling us along, one step at a time. My heart was full of trembling, because I loved this brother more and more, and I thought I had better remind myself that if God really did take this brother away in the end, I would still have to say this.
The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.Job 1:21b
Most of the prayer requests I wrote down during that year of going out, God granted. Status, work, income: the things we could not solve, the things that had us cornered, God was gracious and solved them all. He also granted us 3 January 2013, the day we became husband and wife.
Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.Genesis 1:3
In 2015 we had a house of our own. God was gracious and opened the way for us to have this warm home. Our love has nothing to boast about. It did not come out of anything we did. It came out of grace.
Looking back now, God really is astonishing. In 2006 the American green card I had waited five years for was denied. I had already been working in America for six years, and in that situation the lawyer said there was very little chance of starting the application again. In the middle of that hopelessness a friend brought me to a small group and I came to know God. Then in 2013 I received my green card a week before my birthday, and my husband received his the day before his. God’s good purpose all along was for us to receive that grace together. Not only did we never have to worry about status again, this home of ours belongs to God. We are citizens of heaven.
Hallelujah! Glory to Jehovah Jireh, the God who provides.
