Fifty years ago tonight I was serving in the United States Air Force. I was driving home from Luke Air Force Base in Glendale, Arizona to Garden Grove, California. It was about a six-hour drive back then.

The Lord had been working in my life about trusting Him to be my Lord and Saviour. In fact He had been working specifically in my life since I was sixteen. I always refused Him, because I did not believe I could possibly live the Christian life, and I was afraid that if I did accept Him and then failed to live for Him, I would be a hypocrite. I did not want that.

That Friday night I finally realised that without the Holy Spirit I could not live the Christian life, and that I needed to trust Christ and be filled with the Holy Spirit.

A few weeks earlier I had made that same drive. During that weekend, at night, I took the time to visit Huntington Beach. As I was walking down the beach, someone had written in the sand, “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and thou shalt be saved.” I learnt later that it was from Acts 16:31.

That Friday night fifty years ago tonight, the Lord brought me under deep conviction and I began to be sorry for my sin. I wept that night and asked the Lord Jesus Christ to come into my life and save me.

Did He come into my life? He most certainly did, because my life began to change.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.2 Corinthians 5:17

I became a new creation in Christ, with the assurance of my salvation, and later I was baptised by immersion.

A week after I trusted Christ, I attended a Bible-believing church. In that church I met a very special person, and her name was Jane. She has now been my wife for over forty-nine years.

Trusting the Lord as my Saviour has been the most important decision I have ever made. If you have not, let me encourage you to trust Christ as your Saviour and be saved. I do not want to get to Heaven and find that you are not there. Please trust Christ.

For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.”Romans 10:13
