The spiritual questionnaire

Two questions, asked at a door or on a street corner. The Call, the outreach ministry at CCCH, uses a short questionnaire to start a conversation with someone you have never met. You ask, you listen, and you write down what they say.

Nobody is there to win. The questions do the work, and the answers tell you where the person already puts their trust.

The questions

問題

Both of them, in this order

The answers underneath each one are real. They came from a 66-year-old marine, two days home from service, on a Tuesday evening in August 2017.

Question one

“If you died today, do you think you would go to heaven?”

He said: “I don’t know.” Most people say something close to that, and the honesty of it is where the conversation opens.

“If God asked you why He should let you in, what would you say?”

He said: “You are the Creator. You are the boss. If you don’t let me in, there is nothing I can do about it.”

Why the second question matters

Whatever someone answers, that is where their trust is sitting right now. It might be good behaviour, or discipline, or simply being a decent person, or nothing at all. Once you have heard it, you know which of the five steps to slow down on.

In practice

How an evening of this goes

  • Nobody goes alone. Two or three people to a group. The evening the marine prayed, the group was a man in his thirties, a sixteen-year-old girl, and Vivian.
  • The sixteen-year-old asked both questions. You do not have to be the oldest or the best-read person there.
  • Write the answers down as they are given. It keeps it a survey, and it keeps you listening instead of preparing your reply.
  • You will not feel ready. I went out that Tuesday with a headache and a cold, planning to stay quiet the whole time. That was the evening.
  • When the answers have been heard, the five steps of the Gospel Hand are what you walk them through.

Two pictures I keep using

Both of these came out of that same conversation, written down the same night.

  • “If you were thirsty, and there was a clean cold glass of water in front of you, would you drink it? And if I put one drop of poison in it?” One drop is enough to spoil the whole glass. Sin works like that.
  • Trusting Jesus is like being in a river in flood, holding on to a log. Someone throws you a life ring. You have to let go of the log before you can take hold of the ring.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”Romans 5:8, NKJV
